Your itinerary for the adventure
Although we make every effort to adhere to the itinerary described below, the itinerary is subject to change for numerous reasons beyond our control, including weather and terrain conditions.
Day 1: Approach
We will meet at the Lanin National Park information center (Tromen area), where we will check in at the park and finish packing our backpacks. Around 9:30 in the morning we will start the ascent to the refuge/camping area. It will take us about 40 minutes to cross the forest through which the path leads to the base of the volcano. As we leave the vegetation behind, the trail climbs over the moraine of volcanic origin known as “the fishbone” and then joins the snails of the “mule path”. At approximately At midday we will arrive at the refuge where we will spend the night at 2,300 meters above sea level. Free afternoon to enjoy the place and get ready.
- Estimated hiking time: 4 hours.
- Elevation gain: 1.200mts in ascent.
- Starting altitude: 1,100 masl.
- Camp altitude: 2,300 masl.
Day 2: Summit attempt
We will wake up very early, to have a hot breakfast and be walking around 2:30 a.m., the mountain conditions and weather forecast for the day will be decisive when deciding if the ascent is safe. We will ascend to the Refugio Caja, and then walk through hard snow terrain with all the necessary technical ice equipment on steep slopes and rocky terrain without any marked trails. Approximately from 3,000mtsn, you can access a Plateau where usually the colors of the sunrise that begins to peek over the horizon merge and lighten in a spectacular way.
Here begins the hardest part of the ascent, characterized by a steep and sustained slope crowned by the Canaleta del Silencio (the transit through it will depend on the conditions of the moment), a direct line that will take us to the summit.
Then we will begin the descent, which is still complex, down to the camp area, pick up the equipment we left and continue down to the report area where the itinerary ends.
- Estimated hiking time: 6- 8 hours.
- Elevation gain: 1,476mts in ascent.
- Starting altitude: 2,300 masl.
- Summit height: 3,776 meters above sea level.
